Environmental Sustainability

There is considerable expertise at Keele both in terms of environmental policy and science.  A number of groups have been established in order to harness this work and ensure that sustainability is at the forefront of the plans to become a 21st Century Campus.

This has included considering how the shape of Keele’s teaching, research and knowledge transfer should change in the future and has already led to the development of a new multi-disciplinary BSc Environment and Sustainability with other programmes also planned.

Keele has outlined plans to become a hub for sustainability with its special features being used to bring together universities, researchers, local communities, schools, national and international experts, and those wishing to learn about sustainability.

A challenging Environmental Policy has been adopted covering areas such as greening the curriculum, waste reduction, sustainable development and transport. Building on Keele's longstanding environmental commitment the policy includes a series of demanding targets, including the developing a strategy to become a carbon neutral campus.

The goal of becoming a carbon neutral campus has led to the publication of a new energy strategy which sets out plans to generate energy on site and to become completely carbon neutral in its energy usage within 10 years.
